Healthier foods in College Cafetereria
Through endless amounts of dining halls, residence vending machines, student union fast food joints, and grab-and-go lines, achieving a healthy college meal is hard to come by these days. Colleges around the country have been upgrading their food services to meet the expectations of their students. Students across the country have been spending their food money off campus, which has dropped the number of board meals served nationwide 25 percent. To reduce this problem, some schools are bringing in top-notch chefs and organic ingredients. In our society today weight gain in college is almost inevitable. College student’s weight gains are unwanted and a serious issue.Colleges across the country are reducing their use of pre-fabricated foods such as cardboard containers of pourable beaten eggs, frozen beef patties, and gigantic plastic bags filled with shredded iceberg lettuce. Colleges need to combat obesity by providing alternatives to highly processed foods and also restore the menu to be healthy and nutritious.

Why not to have healthy, organic food in colleges
There are many reasons why colleges should not go to the extent to have healthy and organic food within their cafeterias. First the preparation time and length of time to store organic food is much shorter than the pre-packaged hamburgers and cardboard box of ready-to-cook eggs. While dealing with organic and fresh food you have to make sure that it is stored properly and maintained to be served fresh. Frozen food can have a shelf-life of months up to years without ever showing a sign of breaching. Another reason that colleges should provide fast food would be that it is quicker to serve and a small amount of clean up required. Also, fast food or any type of heat up food is much cheaper then organic and freshly prepared food. With reaching the number of students served daily at colleges; fast food would be more ethical and sustainable to maintain as a college meal. A college student wants something that will please their appetites, while at the same time being quick and on the go. Overall college campuses should provide fast food or even heat-up food instead of organic and healthier foods.
